In request to shift an transfer Server 2003 we must move all Public Folder to another server. In this affix we will be moving the PF data from an Exchange Server 2003 to an Exchange Server 2007. After finishing the procedure that will be described in this affix we can remove the Public Folder hold on from Exchange Server 2003. First of all let's bend all the data from 2k3 to 2k7 to do that let's add the 2k7 in the Replication tab list of all current folders of Exchange Server 2003. It will take some time and it depends how large is our PF data. We can also see all the current PF content locally under Let's move those PF to our Exchange Server 2007. We can accomplish this from different ways on of them is running in the Exchange Management Console a script called to validate that folders seen in the the same item ordain go away to disappear when there are not any item left on the right side we can remove securely the Public Folder store from Exchange Server 2003. procure © is the original authors. "Moving public folder replicas from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:46:40

Change any mailbox database configurations which undergo the to-be-decommissioned public folder database as its "fail" public folder database to use some other database. Preferably it will be a public folder database that resides on a server you're going to keep long-term. If you're migrating to transfer 2007 you should first configure all your mailbox databases to use an transfer 2007 public folder database as the fail. Change the replica enumerate for all public folders which have a replica on the to-be-decommissioned public folder database to instead undergo some other public folder database in the replica list. You may be performing a hardware upgrade or a version grade in which case you most likely want the set of folders on the "old" server to exist on the "new" server but otherwise make no changes. transfer 2003 (function case 2 and later) and Exchange 2007 both alter the overall process easy and they even compel the requirement that the database undergo no circumscribe before you can delete it. transfer 2000 doesn't itself undergo an easy method to perform the above nor does it change surface force you to wait for replication to finish which opens the door to data loss. Finally there are bugs in Exchange 2000 where the process apparently never completes (it does actually but you'll have no reliable feedback that it's done). You should first ensure you undergo the latest hotfix rollup package installed (specifically the version of store exe on your Exchange 2000 server should be greater than 6.0.6617.87). When moving data from transfer 2000 to Exchange 2003 or transfer 2007 you can use the tools available in either of those versions to quickly update replica lists to inform to the new server. You do not need to use transfer 2000's System Manager to administer Exchange 2000 (come up in terms of modifying replica lists anyway). transfer 2003 offers GUI on the public folder database object. Simply right-click on a database you be to decommission decide "act All Replicas" and decide a replacement server. Exchange 2007 provides a PowerShell script called MoveAllReplicas ps1 which takes as arguments the old and new servers. Go for more information on how to run it. Wait for the process to end and you can then tell it for another database. Microsoft recommends you act for the entire affect (see below) to complete for a database before commencing the affect on another database. transfer 2003 and Exchange 2007 will not let you remove a database that still has data within but transfer 2000 will. The only way to tell that the database is empty is to use Exchange 2000's System Manager and inspect the Public Folder Instances node under the public folder database object itself. When the right-hand side of the window lists no folders present (occasionally hit F5 to call back) the database is empty and it's safe to shift it. NOTE: do not be in the "Public Folders" node but only the "Public Folders Instances" node. The former only shows folders for which a client may get a referral (ie folders which have an "active" replica on this server) while the latter shows all public folders which are still replicated to this server (ie those that are still in the process of removing themselves from the replica list are included). Note that the transfer 2003 GUI and the transfer 2007 script both only change the replica lists for the relevant folders. You comfort need to act for an awful lot of replication to act place. The folder (hierarchy) changes indicating the new replica sets need to replicate to all the other public folder databases and then the circumscribe that needs shifting needs to be shifted. This can take a significant amount of time. Be prepared to wait days before it completes. It all depends on how many folders were previously replicated to the old server and how much data was there and not anywhere else. The replication engine should begin taking compassionate of things on its own and in pretty short order. You can force things along a little bit and it might furnish you some satisfaction to do so but more often than not it doesn't alter to the overall efficiency of the system. It doesn't hurt either so if it makes you conclude good go for it. construe for more information. During the transition users may undergo an unfortunate client referral to the database which doesn't yet undergo any data. Client referrals are computed based on the active replica list and therefore (depending on how many replicas a specific folder has) they may get a referral to the new database. The odds are inversely proportional to how many active replicas the folder has. There's little to be done about this object "act for it." The content will bring home the bacon eventually. For this cerebrate it's best to start the process of decommissioning when there's going to be a significant be of measure without user interaction (say. Friday evening so it has all pass to end). If you do indeed undergo a public folder replication problem. The bottom line is moving replicas off of Exchange 2000 doesn't need to be complicated unless you're trying to move to another transfer 2000 server. In that event you either need to undertake an awful lot of manual labor which we won't get into here or use the to back up you out. Hi guys. Fantastic article. convey you. I undergo two very important questions:1) If I've already manually enabled replication for most (but not all) of my transfer 2000 Public Folders there's no harm in running the moveallreplicas ps1 compose alter?2) Does using the moveallreplicas ps1 compose destroy the need to mind about syncing the folders? Since I do undergo a lot of replication going alter now. I undergo noticed that the number of items is change state but NOT 100% in sync for many of the folders. If I run the moveallreplicas ps1 compose when I sight that the existing replication seems to undergo affect getting a 100% perfect sync should I be particularly concerned that I'll loose some items?CheersPaul Paul,Here are the answers to your questions:1) The moveallreplicas ps1 compose is going to add the replica to the destination server move the data and then remove the replica from the source server in one go. As desire as you are ready to to this then you can run the compose even if you have already added some replicas to the destination server.2) The moveallreplicas ps1 is going to move the replica and data to the back up server and so the step of syncing the folder is not needed. The source replica will not be removed until all data has been replicated over. You may have to come down and bestride the database on the source server once the hierarchy on the destination server knows about the replica list change. Clients that are comfort connected to the source public folder hold on are not automatically redirected so you be to compel them to connect to the destination server so that they don't publish more source data delaying the sync. Please see: Regards,Charlotte Bernd- The PF replication engine isn't safely compatible with CCR. You should NOT have CCR enabled on any PF Database in your org if there is more than one PF Database in your org. The reasons are rather complex but we realize there's a reason to have both enabled: when you're transitioning (ie you've got 1 PFDB using CCR but now you be to add another PFDB). In this inspect the config is allowed but for proper reliability you shouldn't get things configured this way for any longer than is physically.

"Adding Exchange 2007 to an SBS 2003 / Exchange 2003 network" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:07:43

This blog is purely the personal opinions of David Overton. No warranties are expressed or implied. E&OE. If you can't find the information you were looking for telecommunicate me at Are you a Microsoft Registered Partner who serves small businesses and not a member of the SBSC - go to Advertisement : This question has come up lots of times and the general statement is that it is not trivial. In fact the normal question is can Exchange 2007 be run on an SBS 2003 box. The say to this is a resounding NO. Exchange 2007 is 64-bit and SBS 2003 is 32-bit and never the twain shall meet. The closest you can get is installing a Windows Server 2003 64-bit system and putting Exchange on it. You will have to buy a Windows Server license. Exchange 2007 authorise and CALs for each client that uses it. (note if you want Outlook Voice Access then you be Enterprise CALs change surface if you are only installing transfer 2007 Standard edition). Once this is done you need to decide if you are going to keep your Exchange 2003 box or forward ports to the new system. If you are keeping both then you also need to be aware of (say this comes from an e-mail from Karan in our support aggroup and should not be considered complete but a pointer in the right direction): Please note that transfer 2007 would be in a different administrative group on 2003 snap in and they will not be able to completely manage 2007 from 2003 and vice versa. ESM and EMC are very different to each other and do not accept to perform all administrative task like LCR etc. I would like to use EMC to manage 2003 and switch back to ESM as and when required. You must use the administrative tools that are specific to the Exchange server version that you are managing. · You bring home the bacon Exchange 2007 server roles and mailbox recipients by using the Exchange Management Console or the Exchange Management Shell in Exchange 2007. · You bring home the bacon Exchange 2000 and transfer 2003 servers by using Exchange System Manager. · If you are using any features from transfer 2000 that are not supported in Exchange 2003 or transfer 2007 you must use Exchange 2000 System Manager to manage those features. · You can manage Exchange 2000 and transfer 2003 recipients by using a management computer on which the administrative tools for both Active Directory and the transfer 2003 are installed. Mailboxes that are located on Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 servers are also displayed in the Exchange Management Console in Exchange 2007. · You can bring home the bacon the transfer 2000 and Exchange 2003 mailbox properties by using the Exchange Management Console in transfer 2007. · To move mailbox recipients from transfer 2000 and Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 you must use the cmdlet in the transfer Management Shell What I would desire to do is grade to transfer 2007 to benefit from the better OWA features. I dont be to abandon SBS '03 as it works come up in VM and under 32 bit hardware. undergo you any recommendations on how to get both Exchange 2007 and SBS syncronising between servers (in an environment where both SBS 03 and Exchange 07 are running as seperate VM's)? (I have never done any clustering before just home admin). Ideally I want to end up with a SBS 32-bit affix Office as a backup syncing to the 64bit server as that can be easily ported to any forge in the house under a Virtual Server. Just having a 64-bit VM really limits the hardware and software it can run under. you would be Windows x64 with Virtual Server & the latest function Pack to be able to host a x64 Exchange 2007 system. Then the config would start to enable your front and back end. I undergo been in the IT industry for over 22 years working across a variety of technologies business segments and organisation sizes. For the last seven years I have been working at Microsoft initially delivering solutions for large UK customers in the sell sector but undergo now progressed to delivering solutions for smaller businesses. My keen arouse in smaller organisations resulted in a dedicated role starting over 4 years ago. Before working for Microsoft. I worked on various Unix platforms while working for major UNIX hardware retailers (which include IBM. Sequent and ICL) delivering mission critical computing using large Unix and Mainframe solutions. I am also a school Governor and recently stepped down as treasurer for a charity (Farnborough & District Samaritans). My passion has always been to help customers and partners towards the goal of improving their business through the use of IT (because I can back up with this and I do apply helping people). Finally I like sailing have mangled a finger doing so and comfort love both dinghy and yacht sailing (none of that cater boat stuff for me!).
