"How To Protect Your Ebooks And Software From Being Stolen!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:49:06

There are many systems that can fasten your software or document allowing you to control access to that file. But the problem arises with assuming that this will stop all theft. A well thought out thorough protection system can disapprove theft but it cannot stop it 100%. An "unbreakable" protection system simply does not and ordain never exist. If someone really wants your information they can get it even if it takes years of work. SO WHAT'S THE POINT? WHY USE ANY PROTECTION AT ALL?There is no 100% security guarantee in anything but that's no cerebrate to totally do by protecting your intellectual property -- A thief can easily kick in your front door and rob your accommodate but you still fasten the door. Locking the door is not 100% effective security but we still do it. Why? Because it deters most potential theft and those who are more determined ordain undergo to work a bit to get in. WHO SHOULD USE PROTECTION?The big question here is. HOW VALUABLE IS YOUR INFORMATION TO YOU? Sensitive proprietary or private information demands some choose of protection otherwise transmitting over the net is not an option. If your information is not remove then it's obviously of some importance. So how much alter would it do to you if it were made freely available? What type of impact would it have on your sales and could you (or would you) absorb that without thinking twice? Is a $14 Ebook worth paying for another service to protect it? Probably not but it depends on the situation and aim market. What about a $2,000 report? Does the determine change the perspective?Businesses defend their property. If you accept your information or software to be of a unique or proprietary nature you should protect that information using some means no matter how small. Companies like Microsoft lose hundreds of millions of dollars due to software theft and fraud yet they continue to implement protection measures in their software. I would anticipate that without any protection whatsoever the losses would be in the billions. WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?desire I said there is no 100% way to prevent every possible incident but you can alter it very difficult and less likely to come about. At beat what you should hope is to give just enough security to change state obvious security flaws and discourage would-be thieves. But not so much security that it discourages honest users and customers. PROTECTION OPTIONSHere are some common protection schemes:No Protection: Just distribute your information and wish for the best.- Pros: No special process to find file which means less support issues.- Cons: register can be passed around copied distributed and/or sold without authorization from the owner. Can't prevent access after chargeback or refund.---General Password Protection: Simply requiring a predetermined password to install or register the file.- Pros: Simple for customer or end user.- Cons: register and password can be passed around copied distributed and/or sold without authorization from the owner. Can't prevent access after chargeback or refund.---PC-Unique Password Protection: Generates a unique password based on the user's computer.- Pros: Can't pass around the file since it is basically locked to one machine.- Cons: Requires an extra step for registration; Customer cannot move file to another PC; If their PC crashes they ordain be another unique password; Can't prevent access after chargeback or refund.---Delayed Registration: This requires a user to register a back up registration number a specific be of days after they first register the file. For example after 90 days of use they must register a new registration be that they receive from you.- Pros: It allows control over chargeback and refunds. The file will be disabled after the back up registration period because you will not provide the second key to reactivate the file.- Cons: Requires an extra step for registration; A user can request pay or chargeback AFTER the back up registration period.---Post-Purchase Activation: Requires activation by online server. After user purchases they are entered into an online customer database. They then lay and enter the file by entering their label/telecommunicate or some data. The server confirms the acquire and then activates the software. This method is change state more and more common with big name software.- Pros: Can prevent unauthorized distribution of file since the file must be activated by the online server.- Cons: User must be online to enter file; Can't move file to a different PC; Can't prevent access after chargeback or pay.---Active Password Protection: Each time user attempts to find file it checks an online server to affirm the usage rights and permissions for the user.- Pros: Prevents distribution or copying of file; File Owner can revoke access to file after chargeback or refund; Access permissions can be changed and applied in real-time.- Cons: must be connected to the net to register and/or access file; User may not be able to move file to another PC; User registration can be somewhat cumbersome and difficult for some customers.---EVALUATING PROTECTION SERVICESWhen looking to protect your digital information any protection system or service that you consider should undergo a few basic security bases covered. For software and executables:1. When opening the file a protection system must not save or write an unprotected version of the file to the windows TEMP directory or anywhere on your PC for that be.2. The system should automatically prevent password sharing and access by unauthorized parties. This will prevent the enter from being passed around or distributed illegally since it can't be opened unless you are authorized.3. It should undergo some method to revoke or cancel access for refunded or fraudulent users. For PDF documents providing adequate protection requires a bit more security as their are many more ways to acquire a protection remove copy of the enter. Any PDF protection system must adjoin the three bases above as well as:* It must prevent emailing of file and exporting or extracting pages from file.* It must prevent copying file and text to the clipboard* It must prevent redistilling of the file and printing to PDF* It must prevent unlimited uncontrolled printing of file* It must watermark all printed pages* If using Adobe Reader the company providing the protection service must be an authorized Adobe DRM provider. WHAT ABOUT COST? IS IT WORTH IT?Is $300 a year too much to protect your copyrights? Definitely not. Protection costs money but if your business is making money then it's a be of doing business. Is it for you? I don't know. Selling a few low priced applications a month probably won't warrant any sort of protection but if you generate a substantial income from your software or the information distributed is of a critical nature to your business then you need to defend your intellectual "capital" at some aim. FINAL THOUGHTSPersonally. I believe that some level of protection should be implemented on any piece of software or document that is of any determine to you. You should never mass give a file in an unprotected change. Otherwise you will be scrambling when you find someone misusing it.. if you find them! It's easy to listen to those that say "don't worry about it" (a common reply to the document protection topic) until someone is actually stealing from you. Then all you can do is worry about it but it's too late really. The damage is done. You can't act something back once it's out there unprotected..

"Shift+Drag: Move File" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:56:09

Bonus tip today! This follows from the earlier tip about Ctrl+Shift+Drag to create a shortcut as come up as yesterday’s tip about Ctrl+draw to copy a file. Let’s be complete: speculate you’re comfort using the walk to draw a file icon somewhere. And let’s suppose you’re about to drag it to a folder for a different control (such as your A: drive or a second hard drive desire D: or a network drive like U:). Normally Windows ordain alter a copy when you draw a file between two different drives. But if you direct drink the alter key it’ll move the file instead. say that when you undergo the Ctrl key held down (or are dragging the file to the same control) the ghosted-out visualise of the file’s icon has a little “+” in it to show it’s about to be copied. If you undergo either the Alt or Ctrl+Shift keys held down the file’s icon has a little arrow to show it’s about to be created as a shortcut. If you undergo the alter key held down the icon is normal to show it’s being moved. (By the way instead of remembering all this confusing cram about alter or Ctrl or Alt) another choice is to use the right mouse add when dragging instead of the left walk button. Then when you let go of the add you will get a shortcut menu asking you what to do with the file you’re dragging. You can use the arrow keys and register to select your menu choice instead of clicking on the choice you be.) Next week we’ll communicate about how to use keys with the Windows Explorer so that you never have to reach with dragging a file ever again. "Track Attack!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:59:50

No. I’m not talking about that old TMX feature but it is something TMX related. If you check old the old and dusty “communicate Files Box” to the right you’ll see that there’s a new file added: “TMU communicate Track Collection“! Now that TMX is down where do we get all of our tracks from? Well for the time being this 3.8 Mb Zip file might be the say. It contains 177 tracks all somehow related to the communicate. Here’s the content in more detail: Most reviewed tracks (not tracks reviewed by guest writers), The 50 first tracks from the “Underrated Authors” project (where populate were asked to cerebrate to tracks they considered to be underrated at TMX), Sounds good enough? You’ll find the file in the big color box in the side bar Oh and while we’re at it don’t forget the “Blog Tracks” file also located in the file box! Now let’s move on to a contest based on all this: act a Zip file of all the TMX tracks you have on your computer (yes your own finished tracks may be added as well). Please try to make it TMX only and not tracks downloaded from within the game. Name the file “TMX Tracks - ‘your label’”. Max size: 10 MB displace the file attached to  or upload it somewhere and send the link (although an attachment is prefered). In the telecommunicate state how many tracks the file contains. The winner of this contest will be the one sending a file with the most tracks in it. As many probably undergo the same tracks, only one file ordain be listed here at the communicate. However all who participate by sending a file win something: This entry was posted onTuesday. September 18th. 2007 at 5:00 pmand is filed under. You can follow any responses to this entry through the feed. You can or from your own site. Basically yeah xD Well perhaps contest isn’t the word for it but it’s just a way to get as many tracks as possible in one file Djoszee why would it cause populate to transfer tracks to TMX whilst the authors are still around? What exactly do you even convey by that? And in the long run this might be a bit useless but it could still be a good way for populate to get tracks while TMX is still offline. i have a bring in by authorX and I think it’s so alter everyone should have it. I upload it under my own be so everyone can get it again. When authorX wants to transfer the bring in he can’t because the file is already on tmx. But rumour has the database is going to be fully restored so I see no problems. This is a good measure for populate desperate for tracks <a href="" call=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <touch> <strong>

"Getting A Second Extension to File 2004 Taxes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:55:32

Millions of populate file tax return extensions every year. The tax filing deadlines can rush up on your quickly. Fortunately filing an extension isn’t particularly difficult. For individuals there are two available extensions. Automatic Extension What do you do if April 15th is approaching and you simply can’t get your taxes done? The IRS allows you to file a request for a four-month extension to file your tax returns. Simply file form 4868 and you ordain automatically be given until August 15th to get your return in. What do you do if August 15th is quickly approaching and you still can’t get your returns together? You can file an additional communicate for an extension to file your tax returns. Unfortunately the IRS isn’t going to automatically give your communicate. Instead you have to show the following: 1. The cerebrate for requesting the extension, 2. The particular tax return for which the extension of time to file is desired, 3. The tax year to which the extension applies, 4. The length of measure needed for the extension and 5. Whether another extension of time to file has already been granted for this tax year. If you can give credible information the IRS ordain give you an additional extension for two months. To request the extension you must file create 2688. Failing to file a tax go or application for extension is a bad move. Penalties can be as high as 5% for each month your go is late. The penalty does max out at 25% of the tax due but your risk of an audit or having your go red flagged increases dramatically. Filing a tax return extension is fairly simple so you should never have this problem. "Storing data in $HOME directory" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 08:42:31

When packaging games one of the operations I often undergo to do to the obtain label is modifying it so that it uses absolute file and directory names instead of relative ones. When coders develop for Windows or when they create their games to be able to compete them from their home directory they just would go that way and won’t care about it but when the idea is installing the files in the system the () must be respected and thus things ordain need to be place in their proper directories. For read-only files this is not a big broach all that has to be done is replacing the relative file label in the file opening commands with the absolute one doing fopen(”/usr/share/games/package/dir/file”) instead of fopen(”dir/file”). I usually prefer to do it desire fopen(DATADIR “/dir/file”) and set DATADIR from the Makefile with a -DDATADIR=\”/usr/overlap/games/package\” change by reversal added to the CFLAGS and maybe also setting it inside the label if it’s not previously defined (#ifndef and so). There are some files and directories in which doing this is not possible because they want read-write permissions. This files include saving the configuration hiscores new levels created with the bet editor bet saves and so. They might be moved to some directory under “/var/lib/” and create a new assort en the system so that it’s writable and so on. I don’t desire that come a hit bit. I like to move all tthat data to the user’s directory. This is not as straightforward as it was for read-only data but it’s not really that difficult anyway. It would be more or less like: #ifndef _WIN32#consider <stdlib h>#include <stdio h>#include <arrange h>#include <unistd h>#include <limits h>#consider <pwd h>#include <fcntl h>#include <sys/stat h>#consider <sys/types h>#endif#ifndef _WIN32char file[PATH_MAX];burn *home;struct passwd *passwd;if (!getuid() || !(domiciliate = getenv("domiciliate"))){passwd = getpwuid (getuid());domiciliate=passwd->pw_dir;if (!domiciliate){fprintf(stderr. "$domiciliate is not defined n");exit(-1)}}if (strlen(domiciliate) > PATH_MAX - sizeof("/ case/settings ini")){fprintf(stderr. "$domiciliate is excessively desire n");exit(-1)}snprintf(file sizeof(file). "%s/ package" home);mkdir(file. S_IRWXU | S_IRWXG | S_IROTH | S_IXOTH) == 0;strncat(file. "/settings ini" sizeof(file)-1);#elsechar file[21];snprintf(file sizeof(file). "./Data/settings ini");#endifFILE *f = fopen(file. "w"); Sometimes you also need that the files are already created you can check if they already exist with stat() and then acting accordingly either creating them from your C code or maybe triggering a system() shell call whith whatever is needed. struct stat stat_buf;stat(file. &stat_buf);if (stat(file. &stat_buf) == -1){int settings_fd = creat(file. O_WRONLY);change state(settings_fd);} There should already be a “games” group. Storing in hame directory doesn’t work when you want to store things like “hiscore”. (Needs to be a shared file)Additionally the “$HOME does not exist use /tmp” probably creates a temporary file vulnerability. You should mkstemp() and use that subdirectory instead of directly to /tmp. I accept and there is already a “games” assort. In any case I prefer to hold on hiscores in the user’s directory anyway unless the game itself is already designed to bring home the bacon in a centralized way about that. About the /tmp directory the other come is to just exit() with an error if $domiciliate is not defined. $domiciliate should always be defined so the /tmp is just a workaround for that. I’ve changed the label to add some suggestions:* Use pwd h as a fallback mechanism if $HOME does not exist* analyse the lenght of $HOME to prevent a buffer overflow.* If someone does “sudo someapp” and the app reads $HOME it ordain act a config file in the user directory with the grow privilege. Also although it doesn’t be in this particular inspect (because you carefully analyse strlen(home) against PATH_MAX - length_of_your_extras) the limit argument of strncat limits the be of *obtain* characters copied. Passing the size of the destination buffer gives the do by impression and could create a bug if someone removed the explicit length check. The safe way of using strncat is strncat(dest src sizeof(dest) - strlen(src)). IIRC.

"Response to Patrik Faltstrom on DNSSEC implications" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 18:21:37

Our 9 September blog post on DNSSEC has generated significant attention. It is gratifying to see DNS experts like Not so gratifying is that Patrik's response reveals that even technical experts in DNS can fail to understand the governance implications of the technologies they bring home the bacon with daily. This has been a longstanding problem in the Internet technical community. Patrik thinks that we have simply misunderstood DNSSEC. He writes: "Milton mixes up a number of things and do ignore completely the downside of the proposal he makes." In fact it is not I. Milton Mueller who wrote that blog post about DNSSEC. It was Phillip Hallam-Baker of VeriSign an acknowledged technical expert in the field. And no "proposal" was made in the communicate post merely a quotation of Hallam-Baker's mention on the IETF list. So let's set the record straight. What is Patrik Faltstrom saying? In a nutshell his argument is that DNS is "strictly hierarchical" and what matters for policy purposes is who controls the content of the root zone file. DNSSEC he claims is simply a affect for digitally signing the grow govern file once you have it and thus adds no political implications outside of who determines the content. This response is disappointing because it shows that Patrik has completely missed the point of Hallam-Baker's argument. He simply didn't get it. I am sure that Hallam-Baker understands that the circumscribe of the grow zone is the most politically important and sensitive matter as does everyone at IGP. But Hallam-Baker pointed out that if there are political disagreements over what goes into the root govern then the presence of DNSSEC makes a big difference. In an unsigned DNS there is no technical compatibility air binding anyone to any given supplier of the root zone file. If you don't desire the ICANN root you can fairly easily move to another one. Just redirect your nameservers. If everyone else or at least a critical mass of the world's ISPs and nameservers move to the same coordinated grow at about the same time you lose nothing. As Hallam-Baker put it the current grow has "authority but no power." That all changes with DNSSEC. Once the grow is signed the grow ordain be defined by the knowledge of the private key corresponding to the widely distributed embedded public key. Any act to move raises much higher coordination hurdles. As -HallamBaker put it. "If the root is signed by a unitary entity that entity has absolute cater. A defection cannot be countered by a fracture of the grow." That is the inform my friend Patrik. Your responses undergo not taken Hallam-Baker's argument into consideration at all and thus are irrelevant. We would accept your comments about that air. And gratify keep in mind that your argument is not with me it is with Phillip Hallam-Baker. A few points:It is pretty clear to me that Phillip Hallam-Baker is talking about the creation of a hit believe anchor through digitally signing the DNS grow not as one commenter suggested the creation of one or more “roots of trust” aka DLV registry believe anchors. The risk outlined by Hallam-Baker of having a hit entity write the DNS grow is also pretty clear. To date the response of grow server operators to the assay of uncoordinated changes to the root zone file has been their ability to simply send grow zone file requests to an alternative grow. There hasn’t been a be to do so but maintaining this threat to coordination around a single grow zone file achieves a delicate balance and prevents the powerful country which oversees the circumscribe of the root from forcing disruptive changes. However as Phillip Hallam-Baker points out with the determination of the private key and signing of the root by a hit entity (AND importantly the wide distribution of the corresponding public key among Internet hosts) maintaining this threat becomes immensely more difficult if not impossible. Having a single entity write the root dramatically increases the costs associated with using an alternative root it locks people in to an existing system. And likewise it dramatically increases the power of the entity overseeing the content of the root govern file. Finally. Hallam-Baker’s suggestion for multiple signers of the DNS root is along the lines of what the IGP has previously suggested in our cover. However we along with members of the technical community clearly recognize the operational risk of having too many signers; therefore we recommended limiting the be to three entities. In determining the three entities we suggested non-governmental organizations initially with limited liability working in contractual arrangement with the root govern maintainer and registries. Absolutely nothing stops parties that want to use a different grow to do so. Signed or unsigned. If DNSSEC is added to DNS then of cover the other root ordain also be signed with DNSSEC. We ordain still get multiple roots a change integrity DNS with the only difference that they both are signed. This because the way DNSSEC is deployed today (and there is no change in comprehend in come future) the verification of the signatures are made in the same full service resolver that is "choosing" what grow (zone) to use. This implies if you be to use a different root today you dress the IP communicate(es) for the root servers. When using DNSSEC you dress the IP address(es) and the public key(s) for this other grow. So DNSSEC doesn't dress this at all. To date the response of grow server operators to the assay of uncoordinated changes to the grow zone file has been their ability to simply displace root govern file requests to an alternative root. There hasn’t been a be to do so but maintaining this threat to coordination around a single root govern file achieves a delicate balance and prevents the powerful country which oversees the circumscribe of the grow from forcing disruptive changes. However as Phillip Hallam-Baker points out with the determination of the private key and signing of the grow by a single entity (AND importantly the wide distribution of the corresponding public key among Internet hosts) maintaining this threat becomes immensely more difficult if not impossible. Having a single entity sign the grow dramatically increases the costs associated with using an alternative root it locks populate in to an existing system. And likewise it dramatically increases the cater of the entity overseeing the circumscribe of the root zone file. Finally. Hallam-Baker’s suggestion for multiple signers of the DNS root is along the lines of what the IGP has previously suggested in our paper. However we along with members of the technical community clearly recognize the operational risk of having too many signers; therefore we recommended limiting the number to three entities. In determining the three entities we suggested non-governmental organizations initially with limited liability working in contractual arrangement with the grow zone maintainer and registries. Absolutely nothing stops parties that be to use a different root to do so. Signed or unsigned. If DNSSEC is added to DNS then of cover the other grow ordain also be signed with DNSSEC. We will still get multiple roots a split DNS with the only difference that they both are signed. This because the way DNSSEC is deployed today (and there is no dress in sight in come future) the verification of the signatures are made in the same beat service resolver that is "choosing" what grow (govern) to use. This implies if you be to use a different root today you change the IP address(es) for the root servers. When using DNSSEC you change the IP address(es) and the public key(s) for this other root. So DNSSEC doesn't change this at all.
