"Moving Files from Windows to Mac" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-28 02:25:06

When you make the switch from a Windows box to a Mac you are going to be to copy all of your data files over to the Mac. The quickest way to do that is over a network. Yes you can use “old school” media such as CDs. DVDs or USB thumb drives but this is very tedious and will take forever. Networking the Windows and Mac machines is actually not very hard. It is not quite as straightforward as networking two Windows machines together but if I can manage to do it on my second day using OS X it can’t be too hard. Windows and Mac go from different ends of the operating system spectrum but luckily both are easy enough to use that networking them together isn’t brain surgery. Here is how to set it up so as to be able to move files from your Windows machine to the Mac. I am going to assume you know at least some basic networking here. Under Windows you need to find our your workgroup name if you don’t already know it. So go to Control adorn -> System -> Computer Name. Your workgroup will be listed. Make note of it as you will need to set the Mac up to use it. Now on the Mac go to System Preferences -> Sharing. Enable file sharing on the Mac by checking that option. Next click Options and be sure “Share Files and folders using SMB” is checked. Select your Mac username from the list by checking that. Hit Done. Next go to Network under System Preferences. Hit the Advanced button. Go to the “WINS” tab and enter or select your workgroup name. Hit OK. In Finder select “Connect to Server…”. Enter “smb://[IP ADDRESS]/[SHARE NAME]” and hit Connect. [IP ADDRESS] is the IP address of your Windows machine. [SHARE label] is the name you assigned to the shared folder on your Windows machine. If you do not know the IP address of your Windows machine on your network go to the command prompt and type in “ipconfig”. If all works correctly the Mac should be able to connect to and display the files in your shared folder inside of Finder. From there you can copy the files over to your Mac and place them wherever you want.

"Share Access and File Permission :: No access to files after ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:47:54

Hi all,We're running ReadyNAS 1100. Radiator 3.01c1-p6 and we use an external RHEL 4 server for backups via NFS. Windows NT 4 (yeah. I know...) Domain. Main share access is via CIFSThe intend is to move off of our crusty/crappy mouth 4100 box and to the ReadyNAS. To that end we decided to 'simply' do a restore from backup directly to the newly created shares on the ReadyNAS. The share permissions were all set up the way we wanted them (more or less) and tested book (valid users could create verbally to the share non-valid users could not). However when we did the restore (i e moving data to the ReadyNAS for the first time) we got locked out of the overlap (!). After resetting CIFS perms (to no apply) we tried the (apparently) nuclear option with Advanced Options. This fixed the share find but we comfort cannot access folders/files within the overlap. Of cover after doing the above option I read a (very) short blurb in the docs.. something to the effect that these settings are irreversible (!!?). go on now... I can't/really don't want to accept that. Is there a way to reset perms once this option is used? I dislike to say it but for all it's head/heartache the SNAP4100 worked pretty seamlessly permission-wise with our PDC. My experience with this device so far is that it's give for windows domain security is between 90-95% there but the last 5-10% is preventing us from rolling these things out as a viable supportable NAS solution (the fact that it apparently only respects the Everyone and Domain Users groups aside from the register owner has me concerned). Please express me otherwise. I want this to work thanks,-J You cannot affix new topics in this forumYou cannot say to topics in this forumYou cannot edit your posts in this forumYou cannot delete your posts in this forumYou cannot choose in polls in this forum

Hopefully soon I'm going to be getting a laptop for chew over and course stuff is there any way that I can move/copy/transfer music or any personal files I undergo on this desktop computer over to a laptop?Oh I didn't experience what forum to put this question in. There are any of a be of ways to do this - depending mostly on the be and sizeYou can use a usb radiate drive it you want and you are talking a couple of gigs capacity ( 1 and 2 gig radiate drives are cheap now and a good thing to have if you are a student)Copy over on computer one then write to copy computer 2remove the files on the usb drive and repeat2) if the computer one has a dvd burner or you undergo an external burner then just destroy dvds and copyas come up you have an archive and can compete on a dvd player3) if you have a router - this is the easiest for large amounts get two messenger accountsthey can be msn skype yahoo or whateversign on on two computers with the different messenger accounts ( of the same brand)send the files from one be to the otherthe handshake will be over the internetthe files will be routed by the router directly from one computer to another very fast between the computers abstain not on the internetI do not experience if you can do whole foldersYou can compress the files in one container with winzip or winrar to make one large envelope and then reconstruct on the other computerthis is the easiest and most convenient way for large amounts of files visionof... How nice. I've construe your say because I'm in a process of moving stuff from one computer to another and I wouldn't even think about using IM to do this. Thanks man HI Funicula,Another option is to use a data link USB transfer cable make sure you get the USB 2.0 write. Yet another way is to cerebrate an IDE or SATA drive USB adapter. Connect the adapter to the desktop control and plug the USB connectorinto the laptop's USB turn. Pete. With USB external drives starting at either side of $50 can give a short and long term solution. Allows easy register transfer between computers abundance of storage space and very fast. It also provides a protected backup medium in the event your internal control unexpectedly dies without warning. Also if desired provides offsite data backup truly the most effective data protection. All of this comes with a simple plug-it-in and go operation. __________________AMD 2200+. 1GB DDR. 250GB Internal. 200GB External. Geforce4 Ti 4200. "Move files between PCs with the power of a Tornado" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:51:47

So you've got two Windows PCs but no network and you need to assign files between the two. That's where comes in handy! Much desire the the Tornado is a cable with USB ports on both ends. The cables are actually flat and wind up into a hurricane-shaped housing. Deep in the "eye" of the unit is a radiate module with software that creates a temporary communicate between two PCs allowing you to assign files between the two. The beauty of the 4.8-ounce Tornado is that it supports USB 2.0 transfers which should beat those files around in a fast frenzy. At $59.95 it might be a pricey solution to some but for folks that find themselves needing to move files between PCs very often in a non-network situation it's well worth the determine. I've used the similar solution that came with my UMPC many more times than the original intended use and displace it in my gadget bag all the time. you dont even need ethernet crossover cables on any relatively modern machine all you be is a regular ethernet telecommunicate. these aren't completely network independent you comfort have to undergo communicate permissions in place or it wont bring home the bacon. In most situations a USB radiate control seems to fulfil for me. Not sure that I'd pay $60 for yet another item to displace around "just in case". And at domiciliate it really wouldn't be all that useful. Also. I've never had the need to do it but I'd imagine setting up an adhoc/peer-to-peer wireless connection isn't exactly difficult either if you really have to assign files larger than what your USB drive can hold? Bought it. Needs adm permission to talk to a locked down machine. Does anyone experience if the Q1 telecommunicate will bring home the bacon with any two machines and does it need adm permission to do its bring home the bacon?
