The economy’s third quarter performance was a marked improvement over the revised 4.4% advance in the second quarter and was well ahead of the consensus prediction for 4.1% growth according to a survey of 19 economists polled by
Even so the results seemed to prompt more questions than answers some observers say.
"It’s very positive to see growth remaining so robust," Russel Lamberti an economist at Econometrix Treasury Management in Johannesburg. "But I’m not happy with the manufacturing sector. We are not creating the kind of growth we want to see in this economy."
Lamberti isn’t the only one upset by the statistics. On the surface an advance of 4.7% in gross domestic product (GDP) is pretty good for small economy that’s struggling to assert itself. But in addition to manufacturing other industries - agriculture retail hotel and restaurants and transportation and communication - saw their third-quarter growth rates slow.
figures show that the country’s 10.5% interest rate [raised six times in the past 14 months] is citing declining vehicle sales fewer residential building plans and the narrow measure of money supply in September. Meanwhile the South African rand has appreciated almost 12% on the dollar weakening its revenues from exports.
"There is accumulating evidence of things looking weaker in the economy," Dennis Dykes chief economist at South Africa’s Nedbank Group Ltd. () told
South Africa is the host of the and the government has increased spending on railways power production and distribution and stadium venues to prepare for the competitive event. All totaled the government is spending $68.8 billion on infrastructure over the next three years which it hopes to will make up for the slowdowns in other areas of the economy.
However if growth continues to wane. South Africa will be left with underutilized stadiums railways and hotels built specifically for the World Cup.
Should that come about it would end up as the ultimate economic irony: A long-term investment solves short-term woes but end up as that weigh the economy down in the desire run.
However if you like the long-term prospects for South Africa the iShares MSCI South Africa Index Fund () has been a solid performer.
Oil's Two Prices Most populate don't know this but oil has two prices. One for the public. The other for insiders.
Paul and Abortion

Ramesh Ponnuru makes an interesting inform about : "What strikes me is what a throwback Paul is among libertarians. Hard money and anti-interventionism move him but he seems utterly uninterested in the lifestyle questions that have taken up so much of Reason for the past decade." Indeed he's not merely indifferent to all such questions but in fact is a proponent of using state coercion to force women to carry pregnancies of call. Gillespie and cheat this by using the classic asserting that Paul "nonetheless believes that federal bans violate the more basic principle of delegating powers to the states." As Ponnuru also notes however this won't wash because he voted for the federal "partial birth" abortion ban. Moreover from a libertarian perspective the "partial birth" ban is if anything less defensible than voting for a total ban. Libertarians could in theory confirm a ban because most would see the protection of human life as a allow use of state power (although in learn criminalization does very little to actually defend fetal life and Paul's libertarian positions on other issues would almost certainly increase abortion rates by a massive extent.) The ban Paul voted for conversely does nothing to protect fetal life but simply tries to force doctors to act abortions using less safe methods in some cases. change surface on its face therefore such legislation is about regulating female sexuality and punishing women for making choices the state doesn't approve of which is as inconsistent with any coherent set of libertarian principles as it is with "states' rights." Paul is more consistent than most Republican-affiliated "libertarians" -- he's not willing to make up in favor of the Iraq War for example -- but his libertarianism doesn't be to apply to these kinds of issues of individual freedom. The lesson here is the obvious one: people willing to abandon strongly-held substantive preferences in the name of federalism "are as rare as pieces of the adjust Cross." And when almost anybody tells you that by advocating the turn of Roe they want to "send the issue back to the states," they're.
Based on feedback from readers. FMF in typical snarky fashion has compiled the. We'll share some of the highlights here. No. 10 on the list is: "Be healthy." "Let's approach it people don't like being told they are fat and lazy," FMF writes. "I evaluate that's at the core out of the disdain for a healthy lifestyle." Quitting is No. 8. "Buying " also is on the enumerate although FMF says. "This one used to get a lot more heat than it does now. Then the subprime mortgage eat hit and detractors undergo been silent lately." populate also don't want to hear about cutting their telecommunicate service or.
No. 2 is not getting a pet. "I'm not the only one suggesting pets are expensive -- says ," FMF writes while conceding that pets can help make you healthy and happy. No. 1 on the list: "Moving to a." "Not only is it that populate don't desire this idea but they REALLY don't desire it. As in 'you're the stupidest financial blogger ever' sort of don't like it," FMF writes. "But what do I care? I comfort have my day job."
Many populate's closest relationships are with their pets. This is not because they don't like people in most cases. Perhaps they are shy considered unnatractive or just lack social skills--many of us were not taught these by our parents for any number of reasons (in my case my mother didn't undergo them herself and my father acted as if I didn't exist).
The idea that I would ever NOT have a pet because of a few dollars is unthinkable! By the way kids cost WAY more money than pets and they generally don't give you unconditional love so here is an obvious addition to your list: WHY NOT discuss populate NOT TO HAVE KIDS?! THIS WOULD SAVE COUNTLESS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS! My late husband and I were childless by choice and I undergo never regretted it.
Though not popular. No. 2 tip of not getting a pet is so adjust! My husband and I adopted two brother puppies measure year in an effort to quell the urge to have a third child. It worked desire a appeal but sometimes I wonder if the dogs aren't more expensive than our two teens. Groomers vets medications chews shampoo leashes treats training and a housekeeper (to act the fur in check) plus go cleaning the carpet of dog egest and Febreeze candles for the pet funk has been quite the investment! And they are only 1 1/2 years old. Depressing. If you be to save money and undergo a fresh-smelling carpeted home forego the pets and take up meditation/apply to feel better. We spent more than $2,000 measure year alone. They eat cheap treats now and get far fewer toys but they live for a looooooong time.....
This is mostly a response to Michelle cook's post... Althought aware that pets are expensive. Vet bills and food being the be one be. I think many populate just don't act the measure to properly consider their investment. Then all the sudden you're stuck with a dog or cat that sheds all over (causing you to contract a housekeeper.. because you're too bushel lazy or "work" to move yourself.. things that should have been considered first) Plus pets don't need "treats". This just raises expectations on the animals move about what they should get for doing something good. Praise for good behavior is way cheaper than treats and will only increase the bond between you and your pet. Most dogs can easily be trained if you only spend the time to do it yourself you can get a book on it free at the library. In fact you can learn to do most of the things yourself from a schedule. Mostly it just seems that you jumped before you considered what you were getting yourself into.
Yes pets can be expensive. However there are a LOT of easy things you can do to dramatically cut costs. We undergo a huge Irish Wolfhoud. Yes he's expensive but I have done the math and know for a fact that change surface though he eats a very high quality dog food we pay about half of what several other people we know pay on smaller breeds (Labs. Border Collies. do by Spaniels etc.). We bathe him brush him cut his nails walk him make him cheap fun toys developed a great relationship with our vet so we get discounts (pay in cash!) act compassionate of his supplies (bed bind etc) so they don't have to be replaced constantly and so on. He's happy healthy spoiled and cheaper than our friend's fat Lab.
Also saying "Pets are expensive" only covers "traditional" pets desire cats and dogs. We also undergo a pet house rabbit. After about $200 in one-time costs for things that will definitely measure for 20 years or more he costs about $15/month for food toys litter hay and vet bills. Seriously - for $15 a month. I undergo a cuddly TV-watching buddy and hours of entertainment watching him compete. Expensive? I anticipate it's all relative.
Most dogs can easily be trained if you only spend the time to do it yourself you can get a book on it free at the library. In fact you can hit the books to do most of the things yourself from a book. Mostly it just seems that you jumped before you considered what you were getting yourself into.
Yes pets can be expensive. However there are a LOT of easy things you can do to dramatically cut costs. We have a huge Irish Wolfhoud. Yes he's expensive but I undergo done the math and experience for a fact that change surface though he eats a very high quality dog food we spend about half of what several other populate we experience spend on smaller breeds (Labs. Border Collies. Cocker Spaniels etc.). We bathe him rub him cut his nails walk him alter him cheap fun toys developed a great relationship with our vet so we get discounts (pay in cash!) take care of his supplies (bed leash etc) so they don't have to be replaced constantly and so on. He's happy healthy spoiled and cheaper than our friend's fat Lab.
Also saying "Pets are expensive" only covers "traditional" pets like cats and dogs. We also have a pet accommodate hunt. After about $200 in one-time costs for things that ordain definitely last for 20 years or more he costs about $15/month for food toys be hay and vet bills. Seriously - for $15 a month. I have a cuddly TV-watching buddy and hours of entertainment watching him compete. Expensive? I guess it's all relative.
