Hello from a newbie! For the past 3 weeks I've been playing freerolls on Poker Stars just trying to earn enough money for a buy in to a few MTTs. I've won a couple bucks by placing in the top 5 percent several times. In fact out of about 20 tournaments of 10,000 entrants. I've placed 88th. 60th and 20th along with placing 340th or so several times. Unfortunately my 88/60/20 finishes were in remove turn satellites and didn't pay any real cash. Anyway as far as I'm concerned these results are nothing to get excited about because they're freerolls. People don't act them seriously and they compete all do by so they're easy to do come up in. But a couple of my poker playing friends (who got me interested in online poker) keep telling me that this is nothing to sneeze at and that I should fasten some cash and start playing some real MTTs because I have a knack for it. According to them to place in the top 5% of any 10,0000 player MTT is a real accomplishment and to do it several times in a bring together weeks is really something. They say that while the players for the most part aren't very good and that a lot of them are donkeys thousands of them aren't complete donks and there undergo to be more than a few competent players and I act beating them. They keep telling me I undergo a knack for MTT's and that I need to go away playing for money. They also tell me that in MTTs for low money ($1-$5) that the skill level of the average player ordain be about the same as that in FRs so I should be able to do come up. These guys have been playing a while; they each alter about 5K a month from online poker so I undergo some respect for their opinion. But I'm still hesitant. I would love to go away playing for real money as spending 5 hours in a contend to win 25 cents is a huge chunk of time for very little money. But I tend to believe that my FR results aren't really any indicator of how I'll do in real money MTTs. So I guess my questions are these:1. Are playing 1-5 dollar MTTs about the same as playing FreeRolls as far as the skill aim of the add up player?2. Are my FR results any indication of anything? Thanks!
I think the best thing you can do is to just deposit some money and play in a few $5 MTT's. From my experience the freerolls are completely different to the $5 tourneys. It may be strange because there's only a $5 difference. But the difference is huge. Don't be fooled by the low buy-in amount. There are some pretty decent players who play $5 tourneys. Obviously there are a ton of donkeys too. I would suggest depositing some money on the place you compete and start playing a few $5 MTT's and see how you do! GL!
I evaluate Radfords advice is very good. Deposit and try your luck just dont be to disappointed if you seem to run bad. MTTs have a brutal variance. And after you undergo played some tournies affix some hands here in the forum. There are a lot of friendly and knowledgeable players here that are glad to help you learn and alter your game
Just accept the fact that you will never forbid learning in poker. Best of luck
Yep if you are unsure about how you played a transfer or just want some advice on poker overall then just drop a message in the forums and we will gladly help you out with your bet!
Make sure you choose up the Harrington books too if you haven't construe them already (check uot the free book deals on this place). It's a must have if you are going to play for serious money.
And keep in mind that a $50 bankroll is far too little for $5 MTTs. Which is not to say that you shouldn't play them but just that you'll be to be prepared to redeposit if it comes to it. That said. I started with $50 in Stars and $5 SNGs and I've never taken more out of my pocket to play. If I was doing it over. I'd start with about $200-250 for that level and I've been a bankroll nit ever since I built the sign $50 into a real fund but it's certainly doable. EDIT: Not sure where i got the $50 from if you're starting with a couple hundred and can live with the variance of MTTs a couple hundred should be a decent start.
If you want to dip your toe into the water you dont undergo to deposit $200. Deposit the minimum and play in some of the low buy-in tourny's. Stars has a 0.50 tourny with no displace and $50 added that awesome value for someone who wants to potentially build up a roll. You could compete that tourny 100 times with a $50 deposit and you should have a good idea of where you rest. Many players blow their first deposits playing above their limit / experience. I did. If your nervous make rules about what limits you'll play and fasten to them. Do not fasten anything that you would be not willing to suffer for entertainment. Definately read some books if you want to alter (HOH and/or Snyders recommended) and hang around here and construe the posts and ask questions when your not sure. Congrats on your finishes as well.. it is not easy to get through big fields. But they dont actually convey that you are a good player or that you could alter money. The desire term is.
